Earlier this year, I applied for two very competitive, very prestigious journalism fellowships, but didn’t get either one. I still believe the idea I wanted to explore has merit, and would like to figure out a way to pursue it.
Here’s the essay I wrote about how growing up in poverty shaped me as a person and as a journalist, and how empathy for the poor is in very short supply in modern-day journalism (and why that’s a really serious problem).
